DSI's CEO to chair PDF/Universal Accessibility Standards Committee

Open to all interested parties, AIIM's PDF/Accessible Standards Committee met on May 17th, 2005 at AIIM's annual Conference and Trade Show in Philadelphia. Present were representatives of the National Federation for the Blind, as well as a number of software companies and service organizations, Federal government departments and other organizations and individuals outside of the United States interested in PDF accessibility.

The PDF/Accessible specification will be a set of guidelines for creating accessible PDF. PDF accessibility is highly dependent upon the objects (graphics, text, multimedia, form fields) present in a PDF file. The specification will describe such components and the conditions governing their inclusion in a PDF file in order to be considered accessible. After development and ratification, this Specification will go on to become a candidate ISO (International Standards Organization) specification.

This Standards Committee is fairly new, with only a few regular meetings to-date. At the request of Adobe Systems representative Greg Pisocky, the Committee agreed as its first order of business to elect a Chair to lead the discussion, and delegate tasks associated with the development of the Standard. DSI CEO Duff Johnson was elected by a consensus vote.

The second order of business was a name change. PDF/Accessible will in future be known as PDF/Universal Accessibility.
