Content
managers know that the more relevant, high-quality content
they can effectively deploy online, the better customers,
suppliers and employees are served. And yet, most
content managers essentially ignore their PDF files
when it comes to effective deployment!
PDF
forms a major component of the world's online content.
It's easy to forget that each PDF file can and usually
does contain a dozen or 100 or 500 pages, or more. On
many websites PDF content actually represents a larger
proportion of the total than HTML or XML. Up to
75% of the pages on many websites are pages in PDF files.
With all this content, PDF files headed online should
get a fair amount of attention, but such is rarely the
case.
Generally,
PDFs are uploaded to the web site "as is"
by web managers, with little or no consideration given
to form or function. Due to missing Document Information,
file type or security settings, most PDF files become
slightly to impossibly difficult viewed through the
"lens" of a search engine!
Don't
think so? Try this
Google search, and you decide if the results reflect
well on the
company in question. Then try the same search on
your company's website!
There's
no default setting for ensuring a high-quality end-user
experience from a PDF. Online PDF files must be
optimized for small size and to display correctly. Longer
files should include navigation features to make it
easy for end-users to get around. Government agencies
and contractors must deliver files that meet regulatory
standards for accessibility such as Section 508. Full-page
spreads, delivery models... they all affect the user
experience.
