250,000
page MultiResolution PDF conversion
In
1998, Academic Press, one of the world's leading publishers
of scientific information, selected Document Solutions
to convert 250,000 pages of Academic Press journals
to PDF format.
Applying
their unique MultiResolution conversion technique, DSI
transferred the full-text content of 59 Academic Press
journals from the publication years 1993 - 1995 to PDF.
The final product was posted to IDEAL®, the Academic
Press International Digital Electronic Access Library.
The
DSI Enhanced PDF/Image files combined monochrome (black
and white) text zones with 24-bit color or grayscale
images for photographs and diagrams. Both monochrome
and color/grayscale images are represented on the same
page for the best-possible replication of the paper
original. This process delivers optimum readability
and image quality at a far smaller file-size than any
competing technique.
The
resulting PDF files are delivered with precise file
and directory naming conventions. Each individual article
is loaded to its own directory for easy integration
with SGML headers and other article-specific materials.
The resulting files are completely prepared and ready
in all aspects for immediate loading to the Academic
Press web-servers located in the U.S. and U.K.
IDEAL,
the Academic Press online resource, delivers content
to nearly 7 million authorized users at more than 900
institutions in 13 countries. Approximately 170 Academic
Press journals have been available in electronic form
since January 1996 to library consortia around the world.
