Adobe FrameMaker

Adobe FrameMaker 7.0 generates tagged accessible PDF files. FrameMaker creates tagged Adobe PDF files when converting FrameMaker files to tagged PDF, making it easier for people who use screen reader software to navigate a document in the proper reading order.

Tagging
Adobe FrameMaker is a desktop publishing application particularly well suited for the production of long documents that are heavily cross referenced. It combines word processing capabilities with desktop publishing features. FrameMaker authoring is highly structured making use of paragraph styles which serve as the tags for the PDF file.
Adding Alt Text to Graphics
Alt Text can be added to graphics in a FrameMaker file. The graphic must be contained within an anchored frame. Anchored frames are inserted into FrameMaker documents using the FrameMaker menu command Special>Anchored Frame. The graphic object is then placed within the anchored frame using FrameMaker's paste or import functions.
Adding alt text to the graphic involves specifying the alternate text for the graphic frame's object attributes property.
Select the anchored frame by clicking on it. This turns on the anchored frame's handles.
With the anchored frame's handles on, right mouse click and select object properties from the context sensitive menu that appears
From the Object Properties dialog select Object Attributes (See Figure 3 - 2 FrameMaker Object Properties Dialog) .
While the Object Attributes dialog is displayed, type the desired alternate text into the alternate text field (See Figure 3 - 3 FrameMaker Object Attributes Dialog) .

Generating Accessible PDF from Adobe FrameMaker
Once you are ready to publish the FrameMaker document as a PDF file, you will specify its accessible attributes with FrameMaker's PDF setup dialog (See Figure 3 - 4 PDF Set Up Dialog in Adobe FrameMaker) .
You can display the PDF Setup dialog one of two ways.
You can save the FrameMaker document or book as a PDF file File>Save As and choose PDF from the Save as type drop down list.
You can display the PDF Setup dialog from the FrameMaker menu Format > Document > PDF Setup.
With the PDF Setup dialog box open, choose Tags from the drop down list, or click the Tags tab.
Make sure that Generate Tagged PDF is selected (See Figure 3 - 4 PDF Set Up Dialog in Adobe FrameMaker) .
Set up the paragraph structure level by doing the following:
To change structure levels for the included paragraphs, select a paragraph tag and click a Logical Structure Level arrow. To change the level of all items by one level, Shift-click a Logical Structure Level arrow. If the indent for a tag exceeds six levels, n> precedes the paragraph tag, where n is the indentation level of the paragraph tag.
To indicate which paragraphs should be included in the PDF structure, move paragraph tags between scroll lists. The paragraphs in the Include Paragraphs scroll list will be used to define the structural relationship between FrameMaker's paragraph tags in the PDF file. To move a tag between scroll lists, select the tag and click an arrow or double-click the tag. To move all the tags from one scroll list to the other, Shift-click an arrow.
Click Set.
